How to find similar photos on a Mac

To find photos that look like one you already have, drop that photo on Seekframe's window, or choose More Like This on any search result. Seekframe shows the photos and video moments that look most like it, across all the folders and drives you added. It is a reverse image search of your own files, and because it runs on your Mac, the picture isn't uploaded anywhere.

What the Mac can do on its own

macOS has no built-in way to find photos that look like a particular one. You can look through a folder yourself in Finder with View › as Gallery, or let the Photos app group its library by people and places, but neither answers “show me the pictures like this one”.

Find similar photos with Seekframe

  1. Add the folders with your photos to Seekframe and let it index them.
  2. Drag a photo from Finder onto Seekframe's window. It can be a photo from those folders or from anywhere else.
  3. The photos and video moments that look most like it appear, the closest first.
  4. To keep going, select any result and choose More Like This (⌘L) to search from that one.

What it's good for

Your own files, not the web

A web reverse image search tells you where an image appears online, and it needs the picture uploaded to do it. Seekframe answers a different question: where is this picture, or one like it, among your own photos and videos? It never goes online to answer it.

Questions

Does it find edited or cropped versions?

Usually, yes. Seekframe compares what a photo shows rather than its exact pixels, so a resized, cropped or colour-corrected copy comes up near the top.

Does it find videos too?

Yes. Video moments appear among the results, each with the time of the scene; press Return to open the video at that moment.

Is it free?

Yes. Searching with a picture is part of the free version, which covers one folder on your Mac with all its photos and up to 10 hours of video.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo you drop is compared with your files right there on your Mac.
